Dr. Raj Bawa is President of Bawa Biotech LLC (founded 2002), a firm specializing in biotech/pharma consulting and patent law. He is a biochemist and microbiologist by training as well as a registered patent agent licensed to practice (since 2002) before the US Patent and Trademark Office (PTO). He specializes in all aspects of biotechnology, chemical, nanotechnology and pharmaceutical patent law, including prosecution, patent strategy, application drafting, prior art searching, freedom-to-operate searching and technology research opinions. Dr. Bawa is an Adjunct Professor of Biology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York as well as an Adjunct Professor of Natural and Applied Sciences at the Extended Learning Institute of Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale, Virginia. He has hands-on bench experience, as well as a strong background in biochemistry, microbiology and nanomedicine. He is Scientific Consultant to Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, Ltd. (Israel). He was previously employed as Patent Legal Advisor at Sequoia Pharmaceuticals (2008-09) and as Senior Scientist at SynerGene Therapeutics, Inc. (2009-12). He recently served as Principle Investigator of two National Cancer Institute/SBIR contracts titled “Targeted Nanocomplexed Iron Oxide for Early Detection with Concurrent Hyperthermia Treatment of Cancer” and “A Targeted Nanocomplex for Early Detection of Lung Cancer.”
Previously he held various positions at the PTO for over a decade, including Primary Examiner (6 years), Supervisory Patent Examiner (acting) and Instructor at the US Patent Academy. Dr. Bawa has served as a grant reviewer for the National Institutes of Health and participated in the National Science Foundation’s merit review process. He has authored over 100 scientific, legal and business publications. He is a Life Member of Sigma Xi, Founding Director of the American Society for Nanomedicine, Member of the Rensselaer Alumni Association Board of Trustees, Chair of the Nanotech Committee of the American Bar Association and serves on the Global Advisory Council of the World Future Society.
Presently, Dr. Bawa serves on the editorial boards of the following peer-reviewed journals: Pharmaceutical Patent Analyst, International Journal of Nanomedicine, Cancer Nanotechnology: Basic, Translational and Clinical Research, Recent Patents on Biomedical Engineering, Nanotechnology Law and Business, WIRE’s Nanomedicine and Nanobiotechnology. He is an Associate Editor of Nanomedicine: NBM. He is a Co-Editor of the following books: Handbook of Clinical Nanomedicine - from Bench to Bedside (Pan Stanford Publishing, 2013); Nanotechnology – Law, Business and Commercialization (American Bar Association, 2014); Nanomedicine: Principles and Practices (CRC Press/Taylor Francis, 2013); Section Editor of Biomedical Engineering Handbook, 4th edition (CRC Press/Taylor Francis, 2014). Some of Dr. Bawa’s awards include the Innovations Prize from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, London, UK (2008); Appreciation Award from the Undersecretary of Commerce, Washington, DC (2001); a Research Fellowship and a Teaching Assistantship from Rensselaer (1985-90); the Director’s Award (2001) and the Key Award (2005) from Rensselaer’s Office of Alumni Relations.
